At Light the Way, we are a growing nonprofit organization dedicated to making our waters safer for everyone. Inspired by the lives of Ryan Britagna, Ian Duchemin, and Christopher Hallahan—three young men whose adventurous spirits and love for the water were tragically cut short—we are committed to transforming tragedy into meaningful action.

Our Mission

We aim to prevent accidents on the water through education, hands-on training, and advocacy for improved safety measures. By equipping boaters with the knowledge they need, we hope to create a safer environment and ensure no one endures the heartbreak of losing a loved one to preventable accidents.

What We Aim to Achieve

Light the Way is in its early stages, but we have a bold vision for a safer future on the water. Here’s what we’re working toward:

• Establishing a Boater Safety Training Program: We aim to create beginner and refresher courses for boaters of all levels, combining classroom education with practical, hands-on training.

• Acquiring a Training Vessel: A key goal is to secure a dedicated boat to host on-the-water safety classes, giving participants real-world experience under expert guidance.

• Building a Team of Experts and Volunteers: We are reaching out to the Coast Guard, local law enforcement, DEEP, and skilled boaters to assemble a network of instructors and advocates for boating safety.

• Advocating for Safer Waters: We continue to work alongside federal and state agencies to push for improved navigational aids, lighting, and safety measures at high-risk locations like the Saybrook Point Breakwater.
